About canonical URLs
- Canonical URLs avoid duplicate content: they tell search engines which page is the "original". It is a tag in the page code that tells Google the source content is at another URL.
- In an online shop the same content is very often available at several URLs (filters, sorting, pagination, campaign parameters, http and https...). If you do not use canonical URLs, search engines may penalise your SEO for "duplicate content".
- With canonical URLs, those pages are treated as a single page and all the authority is concentrated on the canonical URL.
How it works
- Automatic canonical URL on the homepage, product, category, CMS, manufacturer and supplier pages, and also on other modules' pages (blog, forms...), always with the friendly URL.
- On listings (categories, brands, suppliers, search...) the canonical URL removes filters and sorting, and you choose whether pages 2, 3... point to themselves, as Google recommends, or to the first page.
- The general settings apply rules to all automatic canonical URLs: main domain, http or https protocol and parameters to ignore.
- If you want a custom canonical URL for a specific product, category, CMS page, manufacturer or supplier, edit it, choose the "Custom URL" option and type the URL you want.
General settings (automatic canonical URLs)
The module lets you set common rules that apply to all automatic canonical URLs:
- Main domain, if you use several domains with the same content. E.g.: if you enter www.domain2.com as main domain, the canonical URL of www.domain.com/product.html will be www.domain2.com/product.html.
- http or https protocol, to avoid duplicate content between both versions of the website. E.g.: with https, the canonical URL of www.domain.com/product.html will be https://www.domain.com/product.html.
- Parameters to ignore, if you have several URLs for the same page. E.g.: with live_configurator_token, id_employee and id_shop, the canonical URL of www.domain.com/product.html?live_configurator_token=123&id_employee=1&id_shop=1 will be www.domain.com/product.html.
- Remove the attribute from the product URL, so that all its combinations point to the same product page.
- Also send the canonical URL in the page's HTTP header.
Custom canonical URLs
- Add a specific canonical URL to any products, categories, CMS pages, manufacturers and suppliers you want.
- When you edit any of them, the module adds a new section: select "Custom URL" and type the canonical URL. It can be different for each language and each shop (multistore).
- The module's "Custom URLs" tab gathers all your custom canonicals in one list, with search, a direct link to edit them and a button to go back to automatic.
- If you have many, import or export them all at once via CSV.
Hreflang tags
The module adds the hreflang tag so that Google knows which language and region each page is aimed at: it improves your international SEO, avoids duplicate content between languages and improves the user experience. It includes the "x-default" tag for visitors from languages or countries your shop has not configured, and a custom hreflang code per language to map it to a country (e.g. es-MX for Mexico).
A must for international SEO.
